Mix Tape Road Trip

Day 10 – July 12, 2002

The morning is spent filling up on a heavy, greasy breakfast. There is nothing like biscuits and gravy served with a smile and a Southern accent to get you ready for another day of a mix tape road trip.

Mix #53 Best Example of Hipster Honesty

Maker: Dan Date: 3/00 Begun: 9:14am Ended: 10:54am Miles Covered: 106

Leaving Memphis, TN – There has been very little radio listening so far this trip. If any sounds fill the car, they are usually courtesy of a mix tape but this morning neither of us was able to start the next tape, as we were both transfixed by Howard Stern’s radio show. Not recent listeners of the show on a regular basis, we couldn’t help but listen as he ripped apart "One Step Beyond" the band of a girl calling in to his show. She wondered why he hadn’t gotten back to her about the demo she sent him, so he decided to play the music on the air and as she waxed poetic about the deep soulful lyrics and complex music he proceeded to pop her delusional balloons with aplomb to our immense delight.

Mix #54 Kids Into Metal

Maker: Jeremy Date: 1/01 Begun: 10:56am Ended: 12:28pm Miles Covered: 102

Near the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge – Once again, Dan thinks he has made the tape that’s playing, when, in fact, he did not. Dan waxes nostalgic about absurd plotlines from Oz and Jeremy tries to trick Dan into enjoying a song by not revealing the artist, who Dan has a bias against, and hopefully blowing his mind when he reveals what it is they are listening to. "What is this?" Dan asks, seemingly enjoying the song. "Do you like it?" Jeremy responds, not falling for his tricks. Dan’s plays it safe with a noncommittal, "It’s alright." Foiled again.

Mix #55 The Cleavage-Metal Revival Starts Here

Maker: Dan Date: 2/01 Begun: 12:31pm Ended: 3:05pm Miles Covered: 107

Gallatin, TN – Having taken 11 months off of mix tape making, Dan came back in early 2001 with this two-tape set, blasting off with the "Cat got your bong?" clip from Freaks & Geeks. The Records’ "Teenarama" brings back memories of driving around Rockville Pike late at night, debuting new mix tapes. Those late-nite wastes of gas and time, aimlessly driving around Montgomery County, were mere warm-ups for this road trip. When this tape was debuted, we drove for 3 hours straight to finish off both the tapes; a feat that at the time we thought was simply insane. Now that memory pales in comparison to our current trip yet we now see where the seeds were planted.

Mix #56 The Cleavage-Metal Revival Starts Here, Too

Maker: Dan Date: 2/01 Begun: 3:09pm Ended: 5:09pm Miles Covered: 52

Belmont, KY – Looking for the KFC Museum. It takes us far too long to actually find thanks to confusing roads and no signs. When we finally get there, the doors are locked so we take pictures with the Colonel’s bust and admire the KFC flag, flying high over Louisville. We try another building and this time the doors are open but there’s no one around, just large pillars of YUM! propaganda. Finally, a security guard, probably in his late 50s, arrives.

Dan: "Is there a museum here?"

Guard: "No, It’s closed."

Jeremy: "No business?"

Guard: "No, there was plenty of business, they just decided to close it down. For security reasons."

Us: "Um, Ok."

We turn and leave, down the path towards another Colonel Sanders bust. The guard follows us out saying, "If you turn back around, smile, because you’re on candid camera," and points at the security camera fixed on the front walk. I guess we must have looked like spies, on a mission to steal the secret recipe.

Mix #57 Sadomasochism With a Purpose

Maker: Dan Date: 3/01 Begun: 7:16pm Ended: 10:50am Miles Covered: 53

Louisville, KY – An amazing city full of friendly Southerners with none of that Arkansas ick. People skipping down the street, great record stores, and delicious gyros. Who cares if the Louisville Slugger Museum sucked, we got to play wiffle ball at night on the banks of the Ohio River. We were amazed to see just how many families were out at the park in the middle of the night, playing on swings and walking around. The jungle gym area was completely dark, yet full of kids. Amazing.
