questions If you were making a mix of disturbing songs, what would you put on it? If you had to pick one song to start every mix, what would it be? |

Rebecca Gates - A lot of metal and jazz fusion and also a lot of strung out industrial rock bands. Richard Balyut (Versus) - Leonard Cohen always give me the chills. |

Damon Tuntunjian (Swirlies) - Kraftwerk or "Atmosphere"- Joy Divison. That song by the Cannanes that goes "in the city", any Magnetic Fields song. "Reel Around the Fountain"- Hatful of Hollow version. "Getting Older" by the Clean. For a really depressing mix- "Baby, It’s You" by the Shirelles, "Wash Around My Tears" by the Spacemen 3, "Hybrid Moments" by the Misfits (at which point Damon starts singing the song.) You could just have that part over and over and over- that would be pretty disturbing. "Live on the Hill" by Maxine Sullivan actually makes me cry. This is entertaining for me. Ian Svenious (The Make-Up) - Any alternative or indie rock song from the past 10 years. That’s pretty disturbing. Steve Gamboa (The Make-Up) - First of all, I wouldn’t make a tape of disturbing music, I make tapes for pure listening enjoyment. I don’t own any disturbing music. I don’t really listen to bad music. Debby (Butterglory) -Dog Faced Hermans or GG Allin Matt (Butterglory) - Religious country songs always kind of creep me out. Hank Williams spiritual numbers that are always kind of talking about death and life beyond the grave even though they are very beautiful songs, they always have this creepy kind of quality to them. Simone Pace (Blonde Redhead) - Pearl Jam- in a bad way. Disturbing in a good way or bad way? Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead) - Unwound in a good way. Adam (Adult) - Throbbing Gristle "Hamburger Lady", Clock DVA "The Sonology of Sex", SPK "Stammheim Torturkammer", Skinny Puppy "Draining Faces" Things like that... Skippy (March Records) - Exclusively Kindercore bands. Mark Mallman - "E.T. I Love You" by Buckner and Garcia is a song originally written for the movie "E.T.". Upon hearing it, Speilberg pulled the song and contacted Neil Diamond’s people. Speilberg got "Turn Your Heartlight On". This "E.T. I Love You" song is possibly one of the most disturbing pieces of music I've ever heard. Maybe also some Rob and Fab, or Madonna’s cover of "American Pie". "Silent Lucidity" by Queensryche, ummm – "The Dust Blows Forward and the Dust Blows Back" by Captain Beefheart. Something by Charlie Manson, oh and there would have to be some Chris Gaines on it - the failed alter ego of Garth Brooks. Calvin (Dub Narcotic) - The only thing I can think of is the Charles Manson album. Chilling. Jason (The Bronx) - The last track from "March on Electric Children" by The Blood Brothers (piano and screamathon) John Waters would love it, also Captain Beefheart, Genesis P-orridge, Born Against, Struggle, Kenny Loggins. Jamie (Leka) - "Careful With that Axe, Eugene" by Pink Floyd from the Syd Barrett era always creeped me out. Also, there's this song called "Feel the Fury" by Merlin that was on the Just Say Anything compilation back in like '91 that is so bad that it's disturbing to think that anyone could have written or recorded it. Rishi (Space Mitten) - "Your Body is a Wonderland" by John Mayer. Jen (All Girl Summer Fun Band) - The Flatmates, Girls At Our Best, Dolly Mixture, various 60's wall-of-sound girl bands. Tim (The Sames) - A collection of disturbingly awful songs, meaning any group who describes their sound as being "refreshingly eclectic -- rock meets rap with a little bit of funk jam in the side pocket". Sam (Pacific Stereo) - I don't think I would make a mix of disturbing songs...but Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" is disturbing in a sad, legendary way. Jack (The National Trust) - I can't think of anything disturbing right now. I used to have to skip "I Want You" by Elvis Costello every time I listened to "Blood & Chocolate" Chris M. (The Hecklers) - Anal Cunt, Beasts of Bourbon's – "Momma", Daniel Johnston, King Diamond, Cat Power, help me out here Dan - that damn band from JMU that made it onto Teenbeat with Phil Blond girl in it (my brain refuses to register their name), Antiseen, Screaming Jay Hawkins. Jeremy (Arctic Skies) - Definitely Holger Czukay's "Boat-Woman-Song" an entrancing, hypnotic and throughly creeped-out song. Dan (Crispus Attucks) - I just made a fun mix- just your typical Boy Marries Girl, Boy Drinks Too Much, Boy Gets Jealous, Boy Beat Girl, Boy Goes to Jail, Girl Dumps Boy Once Boy Is Out of Jail, Boy Is Despondent, Boy Threatens to Kill Girl, Boy Kills Girl, Boy Is Executed mix. Also, "Constipation Blues" by Screaming Jay Hawkins may be one of Stone Groove’s recent faves, but it is pretty damn scary to listen to. Eric Plumley - "The Argument"- Ike & Tina- especially when its fading out at the end and you hear Ike make some black eye threats! Or AC/DC's "Night Prowler" Richard Ramirez's "Serial Killing Theme Song". |
