Kindergartners:

Nico
"When you need me"

SA: What do you think?

Rudy: (shakes his head) I think he should not sing.

SA: She.

Rudy: It's a girl?

SA: Yup.

Rudy: She...is of...she sounds like a zombie. I'm scared of zombies. I'm going to tell them: you go away. I don't want any zombie songs today.

Donovan
"There is a mountain"

SA: What do you think this song is about?

Cornelia: A mountain.

SA: What else?

Cornelia: Cats!

SA: Cats?

Cornelia: (nods)

SA: What makes you think so?

Cornelia: (slowly and mysteriously) I...don't...know.

Pipas
"No suspires mas"

SA: OK, tell me about this song.

Tacce: It's my dancing song. Dance dance dance.

SA: And?

Tacce: And I love it so much that I want to hear it forever!

SA: And?

Tacce: I tried to steal it from you. And then you gave me it (I burned her a copy --ed.). And that was my happiest day. And the day I got my bike.

Essex Green
"Sorry river"

Rava: What song is it?

SA: "Sorry River"

Rava: Is it a Disney song?

SA: Nope.

Rava: Is it a song of America?

SA: Hmm. It was made in America, is that what you mean?

Rava: No. Do you want me to tell you about this song?

SA: Yes, please.

Rava: Well...this song is about the river going through a city. The river of fish. People catch the fish. To eat them. The fire alarms scare them. Then they go to bed.

SA: Anything else?

Rava: No. I'm done.

Third graders:

Incredible String Band
"A very cellular song"

Alit: This song is a mystery.

SA: Why?

Alit: It's taking you on a trip. On a journey.

SA: Where?

Alit: Egypt. West Virgina. And the Nile River.

SA: That's a pretty random group of places!

Alit: They are places I never went to before.

SA: What place do you want to go to the most?

Alit: Washington DC. They have a museum of space there. And I think, if you're realllllllly lucky...they send some people onto the moon. And it only costs $10.

SA: Anything else you want to add about this song?

Alit: This song is my third favorite song. My favorite song is from Australia, in here (points to Architecture in Helsinki album). I like music. It relaxes me when I have stress.

Little Wings
"i saw reflections"

SA: What do you notice about this song?

Pandora: It's quiet. It might change my life.

SA: Wow! How could it change your life?

Pandora: It might not change it. But when I grow up it could change it. It might make me decide to be a singer.

SA: Do you like to sing?

Pandora: I sing at church. And all the time. I sing to my little sister. My grandma says I can sing like an angel.

SA: Do you think this guy sings like an angel?

Pandora: Um, like maybe...an old angel.

SA: Do you like this song?

Pandora: Not that much. But he has talent. I can hear his talent.
