SUJAN'S 2002 MOVIE LIST
by Sujan

The * denotes that I saw it on a plane, which in Daniel R's world is unacceptable for list making. Even though it's a self-imposed asterisk, I think I know what Roger Maris felt like.

Special honorable mention to the 3 "old" movies I saw in the theater this year, which would probably be numbers 1, 2 and 3.

o The Apartment - Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine are both so damn adorable.

o Il Posto - Kind of like The 400 Blows meets Office Space.

o Brewster McCloud - Bud Cort, the Houston Astrodome and one of the best opening/closing titles sequence ever.

25. Signs* - Just foul. Foul. Foul. Foul.

24. Eight Legged Freaks* - How did this movie get national distribution? Surely David Arquette doesn't have that much marquee clout.

23. The Bourne Identity* - Something about Matt Damon's beefy biceps was really unsettling.

22. The Rules of Attraction - Will James Van Der Beek ever learn to make more than one face?

21. Storytelling - This would have been my worst theatrical release of the year but Mark Webber (Scooby) is way more talented than Dawson.

20. The Time Machine I really have nothing to say about this movie.

19. Star Wars - Attack of the Clones Or this one.

18. The Good Girl (John C. Reilly movie #2) - Well, at least Jake Gyllenhaal was nice to look at.

17. Panic Room - The scene where Jodie Foster is trying to close up the air vent to prevent carbon monoxide from entering the "room" was really well-acted.

16. 8 Mile - Didn't live up to the hype, but was thoroughly entertained by Brittany Murphy telling Em, "You're a dope rapper."

15. Russian Ark - Please tell me what happens in the last 20 minutes because I fell asleep. This would have been an excellent one hour PBS special, but alas, it was 90 minutes long.

14. Jackass - I've never been too huge a Jackass fan, but I do love toilet humor. I'm convinced all boys are totally gay after watching this.

13. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - Sam Rockwell is GOD!

12. About a Boy I'ım a bit annoyed that they substituted Mystikal for Nirvana.

11. Catch Me If You Can - Somehow managed to tolerate and really enjoy a film that's dominated Leo and Hanks.

10. Drumline - Made excellent use of every cliche you can imagine.

09. The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers - Big ups for all that Viggo screen time. I liked it better than the first.

08. Morvern Callar - Any movie that makes a blinking Christmas tree so enchanting is ok with me!

07. Spider-Man - What a big budget summer movie should be. And boy, is that James Franco a hottie!

06. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart - Total fanboy drooling? Yes, but I had a good time watching Jeff Tweedy and his son eating at Shoney's.

05. Chicago - Yes, you can teach an old musical new tricks. All three leads (minus Renee Zellwegger's lips which I could bear to look at for another minute) were stunning. I like that the credits made a point to note that Gere, Zellwegger and Zeta-Jones did all of their acting and singing. Good for you!

04. Talk to Her - I think this is the first Pedro Almodovar film I've seen. Touching and sad but in that good way.

03. The Rookie - My feel good movie of the year is also one of the better baseball movies I've seen in a while. Yes, it's a sickeningly sweet story but it's based on a true story, dammit!

02. The Pianist - Beautifully paced and 100% captivating. There are some desperate moments that may haunt me forever.

01. Lilo and Stitch - All I would like to say in defense of this movie is that it's not often in a Disney movie, much less any movie, you'll find the main character laying on her bedroom floor listening to Elvis 45s and wishing out loud that she was dead. I laughed, cried, and nearly peed - three musts for my favorite movie of the year. Fuck, that makes 2 Disney movies in my top 3.
