The birth of "Captain Clutch"

Artist's Rendering. Actual birth may be cuter and/or bloodier.

We woke up Saturday morning looking down the barrel of another bocce match. Last week's near collapse was behind us and we were ready to get another notch in the ol' victory belt. Standing between us and that notch were newcomers Rollin' Deep, jumping into the Saturday fray for their first ever match.

RD even had their own cheering section in the form of John from Cobra Kai. Actually, he was more of a booing section, and those boos were aimed firmly at the Terrors. Undaunted, we came out strong with Marc and I at the south end and Sweet Touch and Kat on the north side. Nice shots all around produced a 7-2 win, but we knew better than to relax.

Game 2 brought trouble and self-flagellation. Chili had shown up early to work on her game, but she was unhappy with the results, especially on one ball that turned a Terror point into two points for the opposition. Matt, Cap'n and Tasty couldn't pull it together either and a 3-7 loss had us looking for answers with the 3rd set looming. Ezra, playing manager this season, put himself in with me, and kept Matt on the clay joined by Sweet Touch. We were consistently giving up 1 point on every round at our end as we were missing shots left nad right, but at the other end, the boys were able to keep us in it to the point where we were tied 5-5. We ended up in a good spot with a couple balls still left, and Ezra clamly walked up and hit his spot perfectly for the game winning points, just as he had the week before. And so it became only logical that he be re-christened "Captain Clutch". If he's rolling against you with the game in the line, watch out.

This week's award went to Matt Drumm in his first game back from sabbatical in Argentina for his consistently excellent shooting.

Unfortunately, the first forfeit of the season occurred when Electric Mayhem was a no-show for their game with the Beeyotcees. Which was too bad because I was interested to see how they played this week. But it worked out OK because we only had to wait through one game before we could get back on the court for some practice.

On another note, I think I volunteered last night to take over the scheduling duties from Jim and the Floyd folks. There was some grumbling about the way that the schedules were drawn up with some teams having several weeks off in a row, not enough variation in the start times and a lack of "double-headers". Someone said I should take over the job, and I said "Sure!" I don't know if I'll be any better at making 25 teams happy, but I'll give it a shot.

jamie,

this is the best news ever! just last night as our 9:30 game was starting close to 11, we all were saying, "they should let jamie do the scheduling!"

and btw, you guys should make new shirts with that ezra being born image. you'll win every game by forfeit because teams will be too scared to play you. that shit is truly disturbing.

Jamie - You are a real mensch! As a member of the Rod Squad, a team w/ one of the lousiest schedules in all of bocce, I thank you. I have a feeling you could whip out a much better schedule, even if you were locked up in the trunk of a '78 Chevy Nova with your hands tied behind your back. Oh, which reminds, don't accept any rides home from Homer Fink.

i should clarify that no one from Floyd has actually asked me to do the scheduling, only players from other teams. but i'll try to ask Jim delicately if they would like some assistance the next time i see him.

Can you also takeover bartender scheduling? need more buybacks.

Rod has 3 7:30 matches and 4 9:30 matches on Monday nights, with about 12 byes and no 8:30s. The dumbest kid in Listmaker's 3rd grade class could probably do a better job of scheduling than that. If you do somehow get the job, it will undoubtedly be a huge leap forward for boccekind.

And if it weren't a huge conflict of interest, I'd recommend that they let you do the tournament seeding too...whoever did it last season was seriously impaired in the head. Taking away victories just because the teams we beat subsequently dropped out of the league = total bullshit.
