so many questions

last night the neuticles took third place at dr. fact's night of fifty questions. last month's winners, the steve gutenberg bible, once again captured first place.

i had fun. and the rest of my team was gangbusters when it came to identifying US presidents.

rumor has it that next month the cost of trivia will go up. and there may be additional changes in store. could be interesting. but i'm holding out for singles night trivia (or maybe i'm now convinced that everything should be singles night).

on another note, the neuticles need to win soon because i have promised to buy neuticles necklaces for everyone if we win.

about a week ago the neuticles placed third at dr. fact's first anniversary high roller special. we did win bonus round beer. i had a good time.

sorry i didn't mention this six days ago after the competition. sometimes i forget that i have a blog.

always the bridesmaids

once again, the neuticles left the buttermilk bar not knowing the taste of victory during dr. fact's night of fifty questions. in a well fought battle, the trivia team composed of jamie, kaci, jim and marc tied for second place. ants invasion (k-robo's team) took home the top prize, securing it in the dictator round (using the photos provided, name the dictator and the dictator's country for a special half point bonus). that helped them gain the one and half point advantage they needed. the other special round was "canadian or not canadian," which the neuticles managed to sweep.

always listen to directions

once again the neuticles returned to the buttermilk bar on fifth avenue in brooklyn. and this time we won the bonus round (we managed to tie with three other teams). as for the main competition, jamie, kaci, jim and i tied for second place. our finishes remain strong and we're always in the top three but not capturing first place during the past few months has been rough.

we correctly matched the tagline "a lot can happen in the middle of nowhere" with the proper coen brothers movie. and we knew the director of the empire strikes back. the first city with a population of a million wasn't a problem. we just didn't have enough gas to get us to enough correct answers. had we known that bill gates was once busted for a traffic violation, we would've been closer to first place but it wouldn't have been enough.

we did score enough points (38 out of 50) to best the raellettes (featuring returning member dave - in town from los angeles). that was exciting, considering they beat us the first time we battled a few months ago.

next month we will be stronger. we will our homework.

THE INTERNETS won

where do i start?

i just got home from the most recent dr. fact's night of fifty questions and i'm bouncing off the walls with happiness - and the neuticles only placed third! why the excitement? the thrill of the comeback!

after the first half of twenty-five questions, the neuticles were squarely in the lower middle of the pack with just ten correct answers. during the reading of the scores there was an audible gasp among the other teams upon realizing that the neuticles were nowhere near the top. that gasp was quickly followed by a round of "ooohs," as if the previous four time winners (with consistant top three finishes) were seriously off their game.

round six saw our team go five for five and the hunt for redemption was on. jamie and jim aced the visual geography round (correctly identifying five states). at some point i chimed in with the answer "meet the press" which made me feel good because until that point the only correct answer i'd given without team consultation was "spongebob squarepants."

at the reading of the final scores, the neuticles celebrated their final total of 32 (having gone 22 for 25 in the second half). two teams tied for second and a new team, under the moniker "the internets" took home the night's cash prize.

had we won, next month we would've considered purchasing and wearing neuticles shirts (or maybe necklaces).

t-shirts!

Last night The Neuticles tied for second at Dr. Fact's Night of Fifty Questions. We couldn't have been happier because this time there was a consolation prize for second place - Buttermilk t-shirts! We also decided that I should not be responsible for making the decisions for an entire round. When I make those decisions and try to overwhelm my teammates because we need to hand in the answer card, I always give the wrong answers.

No photobooth photos this month.

ready with scrap paper

The 9th Dr. Fact's Night of Fifty Questions is going to be held tonight at Buttermilk. The Neuticles are ready to defend their crown. The last few competitions have been close and I don't expect tonight to be any different. Check out the new poster promoting the event:

42 of 50

Last night at the Buttermilk bar on 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, The Neuticles placed first at DR. FACT'S NIGHT OF FIFTY QUESTIONS! It was our 4th victory, and put our winning percentage at 50% for the season (started in January). We downed a celebratory shot (it was also my birthday) and then had a few more drinks. Photobooth photos were taken but I have yet to scan them. The walk home was broken up by a trip to the new bar at 12th Street and 5th Ave, COMMONWEALTH. I joined Jim and some of the folks from one of the teams that lost to us in the tie-breaker for one more drink.

we still feel like winners

with kaci at the gillian welch show, jamie, jim and i couldn't form the complete group of THE NEUTICLES. the three boys with facial hair settled on the name "THE BAD NEWS BEARDS." we tied with longtime competitors (cheryl's team - choad patrol) for first. and the audience demanded blood! they wanted a tie-breaker question. our bearded trio guessed wrong, effectively placing ourselves out of the money.

UPDATE: the dr. fact website now includes a few of the questions and some of the very wrong answers!

all in the family

losing hurts. the neuticles placed second in monday night's Dr. Fact's Night of Fifty questions. the raelettes beat us by one point. had we selected belmont as the oldest race of the triple crown instead of the preakness, we could've gone for the tie breaking question. there were a lot of little moments like this. and i should've listened to jim regarding the architect of some ny building. saying i was 90% sure, then 80% sure then 70% sure the answer was I.M. Pei was funny at the time. but it's not so funny now. and just who were the raelettes? dan, sujan, mooney and dave nelson were the dark horse of a team making their first appearance at buttermilk for the trivia. and they showed that they've got brains, too. everyone had a fun time, i think. sparkle motion didn't compete due to various reasons, but a member or two of that formerly great team did form a new group and capture third place. i'm counting on youthlarge to have a few photos sometime tomorrow.

UPDATE (6/16/04): a recap and PHOTOS from youthlarge are now online

our brains are complex tinker toys

it's the second monday of the month and that means it's trivia night at buttermilk. jamie, kaci, jim and i will be there tonight to try to win back the crown at DR. FACT'S NIGHT OF FIFTY QUESTIONS. friends have talked about forming teams to try to knock us out of the top three. will this be the month that someone steps up to the challenge? here's the scoop about why we may or may not be beatable tonight:

JAMIE is on "hiatus" from his blog (meaning that his brain can no longer multitask).

why you should be worried: he still keeps posting every day. it seems as though the "hiatus" comment was just a fake.

KACI can think of nothing but roller skating the night before her wedding. i can't blame her for this.

why you should be worried: her familiarty with roller rinks says that question from the late 70's to the mid-80's will be no problem for her "couples skate" focused brain.

JIM is too obsessed with lars von trier to think about anything other than obscure european films.

why you should be worried: if 25% of the questions deal with obscure european films you're going to be so pissed that you skipped going to film forum last month.

I am in my own little world of semi-ridiculous pipe dreams. the lure to create my own mini-television empire over the internet is a clear sign that i've lost all sanity. double check every answer i give.

why you should be worried: I AM A COMPLETE WILDCARD. it's possible that i'll magically know the answers to 70% of the questions.

trivia update

kathy is quietly building a "bearded guy" conspiracy theory about why her team didn't win monday night's dr. fact's fifty questions.

kathy, the neuticles lost, too. don't go all oliver stone on us!

took the bus home

it started raining before jim and i stepped off the bus. what a way to end the night. oh, and i lost my pager. i just went out to look for it in the pouring rain.

we came in second in tonight's monthly round of DR. FACT'S NIGHT OF FIFTY QUESTIONS. sparklemotion held the lead at the midway point and never let go. i applaud them for emerging victorious. next month they get to come up with the majority of the questions.

this is what we look like when we lose:

May 10, 2004

you are as smart as we are

tonight is trivia at buttermilk. i'll be meeting the rest of the neuticles there in time to get a table. trivia starts between 9 and 9:30. i expect to see a few friends there with their own teams trying to take us down before we go on another winning streak.

"i'm so glad you're rainman."

the neuticles did it again!

drfacts20040412.jpg

i just got home from another second monday at brooklyn's buttermilk. the bar was packed for dr. fact's night of fifty questions and with 36 correct answers, my team, the neuticles, came away with the top prize. jamie, kaci, jim and i focused on winning. the competition was steep, with last months winners, sparkle motion, coming in second. actually, they tied for second with a team called the easter bunnies (but we think the easter bunnies consisted of 12 or more people). cheryl's team had another good showing (after ducking out on the competition last month) and tied for third.

a few highlights included my properly answering the name of paris hilton's dog (tinkerbell) and jamie seemingly knowing the answers to a few of the math questions before they were even read. everyone contributed and it feels good to be back on top. we didn't win the free beer during the bonus round, but we'll let that one slide.

as per custom, we took a few photos in the photobooth.

drfactsphotobooth20040412.jpg

(and the best quote of the night goes to kaci for saying to jamie "i'm so glad you're rainman.")

UPDATE: jamie's notes from quiz night

March 09, 2004

not our night

after two victories at buttermilk, the neuticles finally lost dr. fact's night of fifty questions.

last night we tied for third place, only two points behind the winners. there was no celebratory round of shots. no pitcher of beer for correctly answering a bonus question. no photos of happy faces. we came up with a few excuses before starting, during the halftime break and after the 50th question. but it all came down to jamie, kaci, jim and i second guessing ourselves. we'll be back next month and we'll get there early enough to claim a table of our own.

we won!

working under a new moniker, THE NEUTICLES, jamie, kaci, jim and i won dr. fact's night of fifty questions at buttermilk. we managed to hold onto our crown! chris and mary brought popcorn and came to cheer us on. everyone contributed answers and the well wishing continued into the night. shots were poured. and we won the bonus question which ended up with us receiving a free pitcher of beer. we couldn't have been happier. i'm counting on T.S.O.A. to have the sober details tomorrow.
