i thought i loved ice cream
Last night before seeing Star Wars in Prospect Park, some friends and I dropped by the Maggie Moo's Ice Cream Treatery (a Great Franchise Opportunity!) in Park Slope.
I chose an item on the menu, rather than creating my own concoction of ice cream and mix-ins. Better Batter was the flavor of ice cream selected (just like Duncan Hines yellow cake, I swear) to be the base for mix-ins which included choc. chip cookie dough and twix bars. Going to Maggie Moo's and ordering an ice cream cone is like visiting City Sub. Anyone who has been to City Sub on Bergen Street in Brooklyn knows what it's like to watch artists prepare your meal. Everything at City Sub is done right in front of you with the care of someone preparing more than just a sandwich. The process is similar at Maggie Moo's, but with high school kids who don't seem to care quite as much. It's really strange to see someone putting five scoops of ice cream down on a table and filling it with verious ingredients, then mixing it up with special tools and dropping the whole thing in a waffle cone.
In summary, it was too much ice cream. I couldn't even finish my delicious evening snack. I'm not one known to pass on the opportunity to finish eating an ice cream treat. And I think I was still a little weirded out by watching someone do so much preparation with my ice cream. It sort of took the fun away from being a kid and making your own crazy ice cream sundae. Of course, I'm thinking I might walk over there around lunchtime today to try the grape bubblegum flavor.
Comments
I couldn't finish mine either - overwhelmingly delicious.

Inspired by your post, I went there today (Sunday). Got a "Mooberry" (blueberry ice cream that's purple) cone with chocolate sprinkles. I like the mixed-in effect, and how it lets you have sprinkles all the way down instead of just in the first few bites. I guess that's the point. But I was a little queasified by the way the ice cream was scraped off the slab. Is it really clean?

How does Maggie Moo's compare to Lee's?

maggie moo's is apparently the place to hang out if you're thirteen and it's saturday night, or so i've noticed. i've never tried it though--i hate having things mixed in with my ice cream, so i mostly stick to soft serve.

Lee's? I feel like I should know what ice cream shop you're referring to, but I don't have a clue. I ate Cake Flavored Ice Cream for which I have no actual comparison, other than cake batter. It was a strange experience.
If I had my druthers, I'd always be eating soft-serv from Carl's in Fredericksburg.

Lee's is the ice cream place in Fredericksburg that's not Carl's. They have a hot chocolate ice cream or something that I liked.

Up here in Maine, in the quaint resort town of Bar Harbor (where I used to live and where Mrs. Weasel hails from) there is an ice cream parlor that churns all their flavors by hand from scratch, Ben and Bills. Their biggest seller? Lobster ice cream, which is butter flavored ice cream with real chunks of lobster meat in it. Going to show then that their is no accounting for taste.
Give me green tea ice cream any day, if anyone is buying.

feeling like i need to weigh in on the ice cream discussion. not sure about the lobster ice cream, but i have had a scoop of butter ice cream at jeni's in columbus that i liked a lot.
as for maggie moo's and coldstone creamery and other places of that ilk (Herrell's in Boston and Northampton have "smush-ins," don't they?), i have mixed feelings. my sister and i used to go to this place when I was in 8th grade at the Holyoke Mall that mixed things into ice cream and it seemed really exciting. i'm still pretty nostalgic for it but the ice cream at a lot of those places are too sweet for my aging tastebuds. i think i prefer my ice cream now with less stuff in it. can't speak to the sanitary conditions (this is reminding me to write a post on my long-forgotten blog about the new ice cream news here in east central illinois so thanks marc for bringing ice cream into the conversation).

Weasel, you should come to New York and sample the green tea ice cream at the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. Not that I've had it there, or the almond cookie or lychee flavors either, which also come highly recommended. I had lemon sorbet there the other day, because it was way too hot to eat actual ice cream, and the other time I went I had cherry pistachio. Damn was that good.
