giddy with draft day anticipation

TEN THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW LAST WEEK at The Hardball Times is quickly becoming one of my favorite things to read. It's just relaxing and informative and slightly off-kilter, but not too much.

marc brought his camera?

i just posted a few miscellaneous photographs from fall 2004. the four groups of photos here include a few images from adam's labor day pizza grill event, a chilly october sunday afternoon @ prospect park, alex's birthday and neal's birthday.

no commentary for these photos.

gatherings

during both thanksgiving and christmas i visited my parents in virginia. my parents hosted relatives for thanksgiving dinner. on christmas eve i joined my parents as they visited friends, who deep fried a turkey. there was good food to be had both of those weeks. i've finally gotten around to posting photos from those two events. these photos are comment-free. i'll try to let the photos tell the story.

pretending

ooh - photos from a 2004 halloween party! the one where i dressed as teen wolf's dad.

ESPN.com - MLB - Caple: Driven to succeed (Bobby Madritsch)
bobby madritsch is my favorite baseball player. there should be a new profile of him every week.

me culture

a few days ago salon had an interview with a guy who wrote a book about me culture. i've only just begun reading the interview, but it reminds me of chris larry's blog post from a few weeks ago about egocasting and media culture.

in an effort to give you as much information as i can without actually expressing an opinion, i'll let you know the author's name. it's thomas de zengotita. the book is called mediated : the hidden effects of media on people, places, and things.

umm, and you have to watch a commercial to get to the salon piece.

puerto rico follow-up

After playing Puerto Rico this afternoon, Kaci went home and found a link to the play-by-play from the final game of the 2004 World Boardgaming Championship. The page also features the box scores from the four players. It's awesome. And a must read if you've ever played Puerto Rico.

If you'll excuse me, I must end this entry early as I need to read the Puerto Rico Strategy Page.

UPDATE:

Apes just sent an email about the 2004 play-by-play:

i wasn't sure i wanted to read the whole thing until i came to this paragraph:

"GM End of turn comment: Already there is a bit of "craftsman fear" creeping
into the group, and most of the moves this turn wind up helping David, who is
now in a position to put the combination of the Hacienda and Construction Hut
into play for a very minimal cost of 1 doubloon when combined the two buildings
would cost 4. The combination of these two buildings obviates the need for
David to take the Settler, as he will always be able to select a random
plantation and a Quarry regardless of what is on display. The downside to
David's strategy is, without a Hospice (a building that is, in most expert
opinion, almost never worth the cost), he is always going to be doing a
juggling act with his colonists."

Please note on your calendars that I will mostly likely be headed to Lancaster, PA for the 2005 World Boardgaming Championships.

no new O.C. this week

it's late...i'm looking at random del.icio.us links...here's a fun, goofy one:

Whois - JulieCooperTracksuit.com [2004-12-22]
A day will come when I pick up the guitar and start writing songs again. When I form the inevitable, transitional, "back to basics" band, it will be called "Julie Cooper Tracksuit." Just so you know. When it starts coming up in conversations at work.

oh, those eyebrows

Fifteen minutes ago I started watching SUMMER LOVERS on Showtime OnDemand. This movie is from 1982 and features a studly looking Peter Gallagher and a pre-Splash Daryl Hannah. The song during the opening credits is just begging to be remade by some electro-clash band. I had to pause the movie and jump to the computer because Daryl Hannah's character just said "I used to dream I was a mermaid." How awesome is that?

Added bonus: the continual appearance of 110 film cameras.

UPDATE (five minutes later): Thirty seconds later Daryl has Peter tied up and is dripping hot wax on him. Does it get any better than this????

my del.icio.us links

i'm caving. after months of seeing del.icio.us links everywhere, i've decided i need to try it out. my del.icio.us links can be found at http://del.icio.us/marcb.

by no means will that decrease my infrequent posting here. it will also not alter the low quality of posting here, as the links i post there will be of only minor interest (albeit quirky and/or valuable).

UPDATE: for my friends who are unwilling to click through to find out what del.icio.us is, i will try to explain. imagine something like flickr - but for web pages instead of photos.

basically, it's just a collection of links to other webpages. my current plan is to write extremely witty and brief commentary for all the links i include. okay, so maybe my comments won't be that witty. i need the practice since i rarely write commentary for the photos i no longer post on my rotating photo pages. anyway, here's an example of what to expect from my del.icio.us posts:

- Suspension of Disbelief
a comic book fact-checking blog! i'm sure it's causing many a fanboy to lose multiple nights of sleep.

- Lost - to DVD Sept. 6th
the first three episodes should've been put on one disk and included on cereal boxes back in december

- HDTV buying - Part I, the basics - Engadget - www.engadget.com
let's pretend i'm bart simpson writing on the chalkboard: i will not read this until i can afford to read this.

here are the lists, where is the time?

For those who are looking for a new book to read, may I suggest checking out A BROOKLYN LIFE's occasional feature - SUBWAY READS? It's a cool little list of what people on the subway have been spotted reading.

i added more memory to my computer just ten minutes ago. it was the first time i'd opened the sony desktop i bought a number of years ago. the tips of my fingers are sore from trying to pry the case open (little did i realize there was a hidden latch i needed to find). i only had to turn the computer on once to help get the memory installed. my first attempt was unsuccessful due to the odd placement of the the memory components - if i had 8 inch long fingers that could bend in totally freaky ways, i would've been better off. by logging onto the internet for help, i learned that moving the floppy drive was a cinch. doing so allowed me to access the dimm slots with easy. i'm pretty proud of myself. the whole process only took 75 minutes with much of that time occupied by my tossing the computer chair onto my bed and trying to remove all the accumulated dust from the computer desk and computer itself.
