31 photographs (louisville, ky)

no_smoking_louisville.jpg

I just posted the set of photographs I took last weekend in Louisville. Most of the photographs were taken Saturday afternoon (Churchill Downs, The Falls of the Ohio State Park, East Market). I also took a few along Bardstown Road Sunday. I meant to take a lot more photographs but somehow that didn't happen. Until I travel somewhere else, please enjoy the Thirty-one Photographs from Louisville, Kentucky that I've just posted.

I also posted a few additional photos from The Falls of the Ohio State Park on my flickr.com account. Those photos start here and are followed by a few photos from a local Louisville band I saw Thursday night.

During the next few days, I hope to share a few of the non-stories from my trip. I spent a lot of time just driving around (mostly in circles).

2.3

i plan to meet with my OC study group tonight at o'connor's. the third episode of the season just started. i'm planning to jump in about 20 minutes into it, finishing right at now. i should be back later with slightly inebriated comments.

[update - 11:25pm]
cheryl and sarah agreed that the line of the night (and the reference of the night) was "nobody puts julie in a corner." rumor has it that at their viewing party this got a huge laugh. having only seen dirty dancing four times, this line went right over my head. i was more a fan of the reference to nat being the owner of the oc's version of the peach pit. upon sharing that, cheryl and sarah mentioned that they expected joe e. tata to walk down the stairs and introduce himself to seth. maybe the producers are saving that for a later episode, when all the contracts are signed. it's be quite a coup if that actually happened. america would love it.

troy weighed in with his expectation that caleb will be dead by the end of the season. he got this premonition upon seeing some summer advertising for the series - the group shot had caleb wearing all white and standing off to the side - very angelic.

so far everyone seems rather lukewarm on the newly introduced characters. i think we're all waiting for something more to happen.

fashion faux-pas of the night: juju cooper's black and white outfit of the swirled hair of seth's new boss?

i was bummed that marissa wasn't drinking. where'd her trusty bottle of vodka disappear to?

always listen to directions

once again the neuticles returned to the buttermilk bar on fifth avenue in brooklyn. and this time we won the bonus round (we managed to tie with three other teams). as for the main competition, jamie, kaci, jim and i tied for second place. our finishes remain strong and we're always in the top three but not capturing first place during the past few months has been rough.

we correctly matched the tagline "a lot can happen in the middle of nowhere" with the proper coen brothers movie. and we knew the director of the empire strikes back. the first city with a population of a million wasn't a problem. we just didn't have enough gas to get us to enough correct answers. had we known that bill gates was once busted for a traffic violation, we would've been closer to first place but it wouldn't have been enough.

we did score enough points (38 out of 50) to best the raellettes (featuring returning member dave - in town from los angeles). that was exciting, considering they beat us the first time we battled a few months ago.

next month we will be stronger. we will our homework.

season two (2)

my thoughts on tonight's season premiere of THE O.C. are coming soon. i haven't watched the episode yet.

[update - 11:40pm]

this episode really delivered! my hopes weren't sky high, so i was ready to enjoy the new episode of the o.c.. the first forty minutes had me somewhat ambivalent but then theresa delivered the news to ryan about the baby and the action quickly picked up. the way the producers are handling that issue (by having her lie about the baby not having a heartbeat. but really keeping it) is perfect. a cop out, of course. but the right kind of cop out filled with juicy soap opera nonsense that could play out nicely at the end of the season.

marissa's screamfest in front of her mother was a little too much for me (although i do like juju knowing where the pause button of marissa's ipod is located).

i want more of portland, though. what i mean by that, is i want more of the fancy dialogue seth and luke engaged in during the portland work scene. that's the strong point of the show. now that last year's loose ends have been explained and everyone's headed back to school, i think we'll get to that fun dialogue soon.

i also liked that benjamin mckenzie is now billed as ben mckenzie. a true sign of toughness.

what did i miss? what did everyone else like/hate/etc.?

[update - 11:53pm]

dan live blogs the episode while sujan tries to focus on the show.

halloween 2004

Last week I spent a fair amount of time trying to decide on a Halloween costume. One of my key needs was the incorporation of my somewhat shaggy beard into the outfit. I was extremely pleased with all the ideas kicked around by friends (see an earlier blog entry). A few of those will defintely be kept in my back pocket and seriously considered in future years (Hemmingway, Bruce Villanch, Jerry Garcia, Lloyd Benson). The thing is, I woke up Thursday morning with an idea. I decided I had to be a werewolf from TEEN WOLF. At first I thought about being a generic cousin and then I realized that I was being silly. I had to be the Dad from TEEN WOLF. I spent part of Thursday lightly searching the internet looking for pictures of Mr. Howard. I couldn't find a single one! I started planning a Thursday night that involved not just buying facial hair and spirit gum, but renting a movie from the video store. To my surprise (and a sure sign that I'd picked the right outfit), TEEN WOLF aired on some Cinemax channel Thursday night at 3am. I pressed record on the DVR and figured I was all set to transform myself into the dad from TEEN WOLF.

Saturday night I arrived at Juhi's party, nervous that I'd spend a lot of time trying to explain who I was. When the front door opened, I was quickly instructed to look over at Genna's costume - she'd come dressed as TEEN WOLF!!! How bizarre can things get? How is that possible to show up at a party dressed as Teen Wolf's dad and see Teen Wolf there? It was totally unplanned, and totally thrilling!

And then things got really weird. I left the party around 1am and walked the five or six blocks to O'Connor's. I thought I'd have a night cap and see if anyone I knew arrived in costume. The place was fairly empty, but Bart was behind the bar and immediately asked if I was Teen Wolf. I had to reply that I was Teen Wolf's dad. He pointed out a guy about 3/4 of the way down the bar - a guy dressed as STILES, Teen Wolf's Best Friend!!! I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around all the coincidences involved with my Halloween costume.
