hey. kevin smith is going to appear on an episode of degrassi. (via news askew)
i'm watching your eyes roll now.
speaking of kevin smith, i need a different costume for halloween this year. obviously, it must incorporate my slightly out of control beard.

the carlsonics
after catching the hecklers, i stopped by a new bar called floyd for a drink. i watched a little bocce with the gang from the urban bocce tournament (photos coming soon, i swear!). just after midnight i hopped on an A train bound for midtown. at siberia i headed downstairs for the late night post-cmj show from the carlsonics and the capitol years. as i love to do, i took a few photos. a third band played and i think that band was the high strung but please don't quote me on that. after two or three songs from each band it seemed like everyone was on stage. i took a few little videos with my digital camera but i haven't posted them online yet. maybe later this week.
the hecklers!
this past saturday night i ventured over to third avenue & flatbush to watch the hecklers. as i love to do, i took a few photos. posting these photos online makes me want to dig through my video archives and find the hecklers show i taped years ago at coney island high. i really want to know the difference in the way the band sounds now. i think we're at least a year away from me being able to put that online, though.

whoosh
i just watched the final out in the houston / st. louis baseball playoff game. i think i heard a "whoosh" on that last strikeout. is that possible? am i hearing things? is fox "enhancing" the feel of the game for me?
during last night's yankees / red sox game i laughed at the audible "cracking" of the bat whenever there was a replay of a big hit. that sound effect was gone tonight, replaced by "whooooop" - sort of like a tiny slingshot firing. did anyone else hear these sounds? am i just making this up?
i'm all for a mic aimed at second base that captures the sound of a player sliding and stealing a base, but fake hit and strikeout sounds? what is this EA sports' MVP baseball 2004?

THE INTERNETS won
where do i start?
i just got home from the most recent dr. fact's night of fifty questions and i'm bouncing off the walls with happiness - and the neuticles only placed third! why the excitement? the thrill of the comeback!
after the first half of twenty-five questions, the neuticles were squarely in the lower middle of the pack with just ten correct answers. during the reading of the scores there was an audible gasp among the other teams upon realizing that the neuticles were nowhere near the top. that gasp was quickly followed by a round of "ooohs," as if the previous four time winners (with consistant top three finishes) were seriously off their game.
round six saw our team go five for five and the hunt for redemption was on. jamie and jim aced the visual geography round (correctly identifying five states). at some point i chimed in with the answer "meet the press" which made me feel good because until that point the only correct answer i'd given without team consultation was "spongebob squarepants."
at the reading of the final scores, the neuticles celebrated their final total of 32 (having gone 22 for 25 in the second half). two teams tied for second and a new team, under the moniker "the internets" took home the night's cash prize.
had we won, next month we would've considered purchasing and wearing neuticles shirts (or maybe necklaces).

throwback
i just googled myself.
one result that i didn't expect to see was a short note i wrote to videomaker magazine sometime in high school. who knew this was online? i think it must've been posted recently, or been indexed recently, because it's the first time i've seen it. and i was such a suck-up back then! i wrote equally silly letters to various comic books. the adventurous among you can dig up back issues of the incredible hulk and wolverine to find more of my pandering.
anyway, if you're not feeling adventurous enough to click the link, i've posted the letter here so we can all have a good laugh:
A Gasp of Awe
Of all the publications I receive in the mail, yours is the one I most look forward to reading. As a high school student I often find my video skills coming into use. There is always an English project to complete or a video I can make with friends. Reading your magazine has helped me improve my video skills to an incredible degree. And my English projects are better than ever.

was there a baseball game going on?
the day after dan and sujan got hitched, a bunch of us joined them at coney island where we watched an afternoon cyclones game. maybe it was an evening cyclones game. we had bleacher seats and everyone started the game moving a little slowly. the weather was great and the company was great as well. i don't remember any details from the game, unfortunately. after the game i tried and tried to get a photo of everyone on the cyclone but it was too dark to get clear images.
a wedding in long island city
the photos from the third wedding i attended this past summer are now online. this one featured a host of friends from out of town. it was fun having the wedding in the city and the foundry was a fine, fine space for the event. i've posted dozens of photos, so make sure you check out the main photo index - that's where all the extra dancing pictures are hidden.

all media is digital
from what i can tell, the long tail, an article is wired, is getting a heavy amount of internet linking. and for good reason. i've read half the article and i'm entranced. it's about the economics of all media going digital. it's about how anything we want we can have, and how it can be profitable. sure, there's a bit of a pie in the sky attitude with that but it's good reading and brilliant background for discussion on the topic.
here's a brief bit of the article:
The Long Tail approach...is to simply dump huge chunks of the archive onto bare-bones DVDs, without any extras or marketing. Call it the Silver Series and charge half the price. Same for independent films. This year, nearly 6,000 movies were submitted to the Sundance Film Festival. Of those, 255 were accepted, and just two dozen have been picked up for distribution; to see the others, you had to be there. Why not release all 255 on DVD each year as part of a discount Sundance Series? In a Long Tail economy, it's more expensive to evaluate than to release. Just do it! (emphasis added)

handwashings
the rumors are true. after months of speculation, mitch has started a blog. it's called handwashings.
if you've got a few minutes today, and i sure hope you do, make sure you visit and bookmark his new endeavor, subtitled "you got me scufflin'."
it's got photos!
dudes, you're getting married tomorrow
well, not tomorrow. when i say tomorrow, i really mean a saturday in late july. the night before dan and sujan got hitched, chris and mary threw a party to celebrate the event. it was a great place for out of town friends to meet and have a chance to tell old stories. chris did an amazing job at the grill. and someone convinced a lot of the partygoers that keg stands were in order. click here for photos from that night
