all oc, all the time
off to o'connor's for discussion of tonight's episode. i'll return with stolen comments.
(update 4 march 2004, 11:55am): the episode was better than last week. i have no idea why kevin didn't like it (as mentioned in the comments). there were weak points, but there were also enough interesting moments to keep things going. i'm a fan of the luke/julie cooper relationship, and i thought the scene with julie's youngest daughter was funny and well done (but the defragging the hard drive line was pushing it). later in the episode, i also enjoyed seth commenting that 80 is the new 75. i could listen to two of those jokes a day for the rest of my life (i say two because of the show's use of chin work being the new nose job).
granted, there was a lot to be frustrated about: why are so many punches thrown on the show? why did marissa's dad not freak out when confronting juju about sleeping with a high school kid? i was also crushed by sandy changing his morals (but the friends i met after the show last night liked that he was standing by his family) - i live in a tv influenced world where i think there's always another way out of the situation. and it's sad to see anna go...my fingers are crossed she'll return.
Comments
worst episode ever.

kfan!
i hate the psycho fiancee/chino girl plot line. but i'm a sucker for anything between anna and seth. i wonder when she'll reappear in newport beach and steal seth away from summer...

oh my god you guys are FUCKING KILLING ME. you all say last week sucked when it was perfectly servicable, and now we get an actually terrible episode and you all cream your slacks.
things wrong with last night's episode.
i love anna with all my heart, but they totally over-milked her goodbye. she wouldn't have been THAT teary. and the whole banging on the glass crap? give me a break. seth doesn't show his emotions like that.
the fight scene was totally phoned in. it was staged really strangely, like we were watching it from far away, instead of being all up in their respective grills.
summer got almost NO screen time. and when she did she had bags under her eyes? anyone else catch that? in the scene where she tells cohen to go after anna? what was that?
there were no really great lines. 1/2 points go to summer's line about being shallow and ryan's "don't make fun of journey." but that was it.
luke is lusting after MILF and all he can think to utter is "your assssssssss." no buzz.
overall it was a really joyless episode. i defy you to prove otherwise.

my flirtation with enjoying this show is over. without the wife around to forcefully leave it on for an hour, i couldn't take more than 5 minutes of it. the main reason: Ryan. that guy has some serious Keanu-level acting problems. first solution: find at least one facial expression that doesn't make you look like a dullard.

i realized why i didn't enjoy this episode very much. too much ryan atwood. i'm sick of looking at his dumb face and the one dumb emotion he's capable of acting out. also sandy's hair was wack.

While I totally agree about the range of chino's acting abilities and facial expressions, i do have to say that i think there was one point last night where he almost smiled, wasn't there? that's one for the record books. 2 facial expressions, here we come!

your expectations are too high for this show! a run of two or three good episodes a few months ago has everyone expecting that all the time. i think we should take the next three weeks and really think about what we want from THE OC and realize that we don't want much from it at all. of course, i'm the guy who said to dan last night that i wasn't in the mood to watch tv (that mood only lasted for 30 minutes, but still! total shocker.)

we both know anna's not coming back! samaire has a development deal! good riddance.
why has no one mentioned the cameo in three weeks by PARIS HILTON?
Posted by: erica | March 4, 2004 11:55 PM
we haven't mentioned it because the appearance of paris certainly means the show is jumping the shark. keep her away from newport! please!
and marc, you are ridiculous. "think about what we want from the oc?" um, okay, dad! i want to be mildly entertained! i don't know why that's suddenly too much to ask out of a tv show.

yeah...sorry about my rant there. i think i was just upset because it dawned on me that the great lines i'd come to expect from THE OC haven't been present in the past two episodes. i've been trying to talk myself down from loving this show because my hopes had gotten too high. i will say that i did like the talk of chest shaving when ryan and seth were sitting on that pier bench, though.

who cares about paris hilton...um, colin hanks with long stringy LA hair? what the fuck is up with young LA? why they all have to have the same gross hair? does he go to the same stylist as the lads from phantom planet. bleccch.

c'mon, sujan. you know you want paris to bring her cute little dog onto the show.
and the rest of us are left wondering how THE OC became VEGAS without us knowing about it.
Posted by: marc | March 5, 2004 12:38 PM
I actually don't mind Vegas. Am I the only one?

i didn't think the episode was terrible and i enjoyed watching it. so there.
i'm on marc's side-- what are you expecting when you're watching The OC? It made me laugh and that's all I can ask for. If we're going to start being annoyed by the ridiculous moments in the show instead of enjoying them, then we might as well be watching nova.
for me, the whole episode sparked a night-long conversation between me and donovan about how many fights ryan's gotten into since the show has started (and with whom). that's what i want from the oc-- some laughs and funny conversation.
and does anyone know about the fights? there's the one with luke in the beach house (first ep), the one with luke on the soccer field, the one with luke in mexico, the one with oliver in the student lounge, and now the one with milo/gabe/whatever his name is now... anything else? It was Jimmy who got into a fight at the debutante ball, right? (and let's not forget marissa's quip to teresa on wednesday about how it hasn't been the first time a fight's broken out at a fancy party...)
