this link has it all

a fan of letterman? how about tom shales? maybe you really just like reading the ny observer. aaron barnhart of tv barn was referenced in a recent episode of "ed" and goes on the explain why. the article is a great afternoon read when you're trying to avoid thinking about how lame your halloween costume is.

exciting things, exciting things

a few quick notes before i go to bed. chris larry played some amazing cambodian garage rock(scroll down to second review) on his live radio show tuesday night.

alex recently revamped lachimafilms.com. check out the news section for continually updated info about the creative things he's been up to. one of the most exciting things he's been doing is handling the film/video channel of wiselephant, the new company helping artists clear a path between their work and their audience through marketing support and more.

and if you haven't checked out lazy comet, jamie's new fotolog, do so now. he's currently borrowing my digital camera and the stuff posted on his fotolog is just a tease for what he'll be submitting to the borrowed camera project.

playing catch up

i went to virginia this past weekend. i spent my saturday morning visiting various yard sales in town (some urge to find cool stuff like on the show "second hand stories"). i bought a 3 inch square picture frame for fifty cents. i saw one yard sale where every item was halloween related (i think the proprietor purchased the excess inventory from a party store). because i woke at 7:30am to visit the yard sales, i had to take a nap saturday afternoon.

no online dating this past weekend. but i think i'm almost ready for another round of the drug. here's a tale published on the black table last week about online dating in boston.

the surreal life 2

ready for a second season of the surreal life? according to variety the surreal life 2 is coming to the wb in 2004. the cast looks as bizarre as ever (erik estrada! trichelle from real world las vegas!). reality blurred has some news on the subject.

can't wait that long and want to recall the glory of the first season? read jeremy's episode by episode rundown. read all those but can't get enough of this jeremy character? check out tale seven of the innkeeper's reckoning.

secondhand stories

this morning i recorded "second hand stories" on pbs. check your local cable guide right now and find out when it's on. it's a lot of fun following the two creators around the country as they visit thrift stores, yard sales and auctions buying and examining odd memorabilia. oh, and joe's record paradise in maryland makes an appearance.

it's a great show! by reading the description one would assume it covers the same territory as “hey remember!” on HGTV or another of those silly shows on the upper reaches of the cable television tier. SECOND HAND STORIES transcends all of those. chris wilcha’s voice as narrator shines through clearly and the direction of the episode is fun and carefree. the show does a great job mixing nostalgia for items with the quirkiness of buyers and sellers.

second hand stories airs again at 10:30 monday night in new york on channel 13.

some unknown person tipped me off to this via a comment on my dvr blog. if you see anything worth recording (like this show), let me know!

BLC

in honor of the exciting baseball playoff season, i am now enjoying a few shreds of big league chew. it's pretty fantastic and brings back memories of the mid-80s when i played parks & rec. baseball. being allowed to have a pouch of big league chew then was a rare thing due to the packaging resembling pouches of tobacco. i was always disgusted by the grape. this original flavor is as fine as silk, though.

glimpses of youth

One of tonight’s other “blast from the pasts” (in addition to watching college pal, Gina Main, on “Fear Factor”) included the watching of the video for Calla’s “Televised.” It aired this past weekend on “Mixtape Mixdown - Indie Rock” on Fuse. The video is a collage of various live clips and photographs. It all works well together, but the most exciting thing was catching a few images from the town where I grew up – Fredericksburg, VA. About three quarters of the way into the video, there are a few shots of Allman’s Bar-B-Q. The video, directed by Moh Azim (with pictures by Bobby Barocci), includes wintry, ethereal images of the one-story brick barbecue joint that’s been around for decades. While watching the video again, I noticed that a few shots of the Twi-Lite Motel were also featured. The Twi-Lite Motel sits alongside Route 1, two blocks from Allman’s and has that classic “motel” look. It’s that kind of place where you would’ve taken your girl in high school to lose your virginity (if you were both into that pseudo-retro-hipster thing yet always high out of our minds on some kind of low-grade heroin – so out of our minds that grime becomes cool). The other thing I should note is that I’ve never eaten at Allman’s, even though it’s a Fredericksburg institution. I don’t really like barbecue. I’ll make a point of eating there the next time I’m in town, though.

aww, my little nanoaudience, so cute

i think i'm a few days behind the curve, but i just read a white paper about the world of blogs and how they're mostly used by teenage girls for occasional communication and then quickly abandoned. it's called the blogging iceberg and is worth skimming, especially for the great term "nanoaudience." it's a word i haven't seen before but that i imagine will pick up quite a bit of steam in the next few months. the concept of the small audience of friends and family members for websites has been around for quite some time, but i've never heard it described so well. and i guess a nanoaudience is smaller than a microaudience? (in looking for an extra link or two about "nanoaudiences" i just realized that mark siegel is much funnier about playing with the concept of audience size (micro, mini, etc.) than i am). (link via reason's hit & run)

one other quick thing about the survey mentioned above - one caveat appears to have been left out, or should've been mentioned. i think i lot of people who have blogs or livejournals or diaryland pages have more than one. or started one then abandoned it for another one. it's possible that someone could have a blogspot blog for traditional blog type entries, a livejournal for private sharing of thoughts with friends and an old diaryland page that was abandoned for llivejournal. and over the course of a few years, it's possible that a person let these blogs build up, without deleting them. i guess trying to get those real numbers is where things get really tough.

one of the nerds

an hour ago i watched the first complete episode of fear factor i've ever seen. that whole eating maggots things is gross. and the climbing around the bottom of a spinning helicoptor thing looks tough. and the flipping the car like a stunt person is awesome. so, yeah, not a show i'll watch again, but an episode i'm glad i made an exception for. a college friend of mine was on the show and carried herself quite well, even announcing that music from 'lord of the rings' was played during her wedding.

i haven't seen gina since the fall of '96 or the summer of '97, so it was pretty wild to see that same person on an nbc show competing against five people who weren't as interesting as she was. still. what a bizarre show. i have it saved on the dvr and can make a tape of it in case anyone wants to watch it. recording things to the dvr and then spitting out tapes of said things is my new guilty pleasure.

whaaat?

typically i don't like to repeat gossip. unless it's about my friends. and i haven't given "big brother" (the tv show) much thought during the past two years. but i just read that cbs president, les moonves, and big brother host, julie chen, are dating.

hey balgavy, tell balgeary, balgury is dead

i know i'm a sort of paranoid person. i can't help it. that's what makes me a little paranoid. if i could help it, it wouldn't always get my brain into trouble. but what's up with the new ted leo ep? it's called "tell balgeary, balgury is dead." those letters are a little too close to the letters in my last name to allow me to sleep comfortably tonight.

i'm listening to beulah's new album, yoko. the second song ("landslide baby") features a sound that resembles the sound made by my pager. it's driving me crazy. but i'm into the album.
