42 of 50
Last night at the Buttermilk bar on 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, The Neuticles placed first at DR. FACT'S NIGHT OF FIFTY QUESTIONS! It was our 4th victory, and put our winning percentage at 50% for the season (started in January). We downed a celebratory shot (it was also my birthday) and then had a few more drinks. Photobooth photos were taken but I have yet to scan them. The walk home was broken up by a trip to the new bar at 12th Street and 5th Ave, COMMONWEALTH. I joined Jim and some of the folks from one of the teams that lost to us in the tie-breaker for one more drink.
Posted by marc@balgavy.com at August 10, 2004 12:37 PMnext month, no more tiebreakers. they're nerve-wracking and (after last night) highly contentious. i still can't believe that woman and her histrionics. if you're going to be so serious, take it to Jeopardy.
Posted by: jamie at August 10, 2004 01:30 PMwhat was the deal with the contentiousness of the tiebreaker?
Posted by: kfan at August 10, 2004 04:49 PMthe deal was that there was a three way tie for first after the final round and the question was an estimation query...how much is the winning pot? closest one to the total will win. the guesses were 225, 336 and 389 (or something like that) we announced that the pot was 295 and so with an estimation of 336 the neuticles were the winners and at that point some girl from a team called (f)lame on cried foul because this was, according to her, supposed to be run like the price is right and so her team should win because they were the only team that didn't go over. in reality there was only one team that was contentious, eddie and the cruisers, the other first place team was fine with the results, but according to lame on, they were the only team that really needed the money and because this was “like the price is right” they should win. at no point was it said that you couldn't go over, it was just left at, whomever is closest to the pot will win. it was really quite funny watching this girl stomp and pace around outside because she couldn't have it her way. it's a game, you are out three bucks to play, i understand that when money gets involved people get a bit more agitated, but give it a break, you lost, get over it. the problem was that we let people (one person) try and argue points, next time, we'll make the announcement at the beginning of the game that the judges ruling is final, if you have a problem with that we will gladly refund your money, scratch your name off the ticket and you can watch or go home, in the end the reality of the situation is that the dr fact team runs trivia night, not the contestants.
Posted by: sam at August 10, 2004 07:01 PMThe fact that the annoying complainer was wearing a Kerry button almost makes me want Bush to win now. (JUST KIDDING)
Posted by: jim at August 10, 2004 08:23 PMthanks for the explanation, sam! i hope to prepare a more detailed entry later tonight after i finish enjoying some leftover birthday cake.
Posted by: marc at August 10, 2004 10:10 PMHappy bday, Marc! You kick ass!
Posted by: Claire at August 11, 2004 01:19 AMwow, i realize i'm chiming in a little late here... but how nice that there's a guest appearance by dr. fact himself this month!
anyway, the chode patrol had an excellently balanced team this week. john carried us for two rounds (celeb moms and one other...), and though it was probably my only significant contribution, i think i was the only person in the bar who answered the Polish/polish question correctly. maybe?
congrats again to the neuticles... and happy bday marc!
happy birthday! and hey maybe we could get more cake with that drink...
