wonderfalls off the schedule
all that smart water i've been drinking lately seems to be keeping me from falling asleep.
as you may not know, wonderfalls was cancelled. i think kfan was the only person besides me who watched it, so don't worry. you only missed a show that was developing into something good. i found out about the cancellation this weekend and sent kevin a note. he was pretty steamed. and i can understand why. but i also understand the other side of the story. for the past few days i've been trying to think about how the argument for that other side goes. just now i read it never ends on teevee.org which does a nice, cute job summarizing the world of network television.
now that i've mentioned that, i'll also mention that episode 4 of wonderfalls really had me coming around to liking the show more. i read earlier tonight that it's rumored the show may continue in canada. (via whedonesque)
Posted by marc@balgavy.com at April 6, 2004 04:42 AMthe person who wrote that article is an idiot. yes, duh, tv is a business, and yes duh every show gets cancelled eventually. so are we not supposed to get emotionally attached to anything we see on tv? wonderfalls spoke to me, i really enjoyed the characters and the plots, and i'm not going to feel guilty for being sad to see it go so soon.
i don't think it would have been that big of a deal to let the show finish out the season, at least. it might have done a lot better in the summer.
but i think the larger issue is that fox has done this with a lot of shows lately, and particular critically acclaimed ones. you know the list as well as i. so it's not just about this show, it's about wanting to know who the hell is making the decisions over there. what would be nice is if networks could give fans a heads up: "Hey this isn't doing so well, and we're thinking of cancelling it." that would put the onus of support on the fans and their grassroots, word of mouth campaigns to find the show viewers. i would love to see something like that. let the fans prove to the networds that a show is viable!
whatever. sorry i'm upset about wonderfalls. let's all go watch some more commercials for cracking up.
Posted by: kfan at April 6, 2004 03:08 PMjust the sort of empassioned plea i was hoping for (but don't get me started on the word "empassioned" - i couldn't stop thinking about ways to use it in order to write about last night's episode of EVERWOOD).
i agree with you kfan about wanting a serious and real "hey, pay attention a good show might disappear" report from the networks, but i think the heads up the fans got in this case was the moving of WonderFalls from friday to thursday.
what's most shocking is that 13 EPISODES OF THE SHOW HAVE ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED. the cost to make those shows has been spent! i just wish i hand't grown up as a teenager under the impression that a 500 channel universe would mean that the stuff i wanted to watch would always find a home.
Posted by: marc at April 6, 2004 03:47 PMthat's a great point about the money already have been spent on the show. i mean, i have no idea what they're going to replace it with, but surely it would have been more cost effective for them to advertise the new night and time a little bit more, and then rung whatever ad dollars they could have out of it?
as far as the move to thursdays being the wake-up call, you're right, and that's what moved me to email you and a lot of my other friends about it. i just can't get past understand the mindset of a company that moves a show to a night and then pulls it off the air completely after one week at that timeslot. of COURSE wonderfalls got trampled in the ratings. no show has ever switched nights and gotten increased ratings that first week, has it? maybe there are rare cases, but still.
Posted by: kfan at April 6, 2004 04:09 PMunfortunately, it's probably more cost effective for fox to not air those episodes. by not airing it, i'm sure there's a way to write off the costs or get some kind of tax deal. in the tv world, i think it's all about the deals, and there's obviously a cost savings for not airing the show vs. re-running an episode of THE SWAN that aired earlier in the week.
and, as i've read before (maybe on salon a few weeks ago?) fox is all about trying to play the art vs. the quick buck. unfortunately, things seems to be swaying in the direction of the quick buck. this is, after all, the network that cancelled that modern day romeo & juliet starring ron silver.
Posted by: marc at April 6, 2004 04:26 PMwhy haven't they cancelled arrested development, i wonder? do you think ron howard is working some kind of back-room deal to pressure them into keeping it on the air a while longer? they don't have the ratings either, just the critical acclaim.
i guess i'm just still really mad about them cancelling opposite sex.
i'd love for the networks to adopt a dvd-on-demand service. i mean how complicated can it be for them to produce these things? a show gets cancelled, start taking dvd orders the next day. i don't even need a lot of fancy extras, i just want the complete seasons.
Posted by: kfan at April 6, 2004 04:52 PMi swear i'm not trying to get all my news from whedonesque.com but the kids over there really keep an eye on how things work when it comes to tv and fandom.
a recent headline pointed to this link (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=1359 at tv shows on dvd that mentions that voting to send wonderfalls to dvd has been suspended due to the creation of fake accounts. over the weekend the show shot up hundreds of places when word of cancellation began to leak. i've never really checked out tvshowsondvd.com but it seems like it could be an interesting resourse.
but, c'mon, freaks & geeks is now out on dvd and i've flipped through the special collector's edition. that thing is a fucking masterpiece and i say that before putting disc one into the dvd player.
Posted by: marc at April 6, 2004 05:19 PMi seriously love both of you.
Posted by: amy at April 6, 2004 09:49 PMnote to marc: chicks dig us, maybe we should take the act on the road?
Posted by: kfan at April 7, 2004 10:25 AMi just want to say thanks to Fox for agreeing to bring wonderfalls back for at least two years..
