but sarah, that still doesn't answer the question of how paris would react if i stuck the ends of an ethernet cable in my ear like a stethoscope.

I think Paris would react really favorably if you had ethernet cbles in your ears. She'd be all "If that's your thing go a head and do it" I think that she would be more approving if they were Versace ethernet cables, though.
that's what i was afraid of, Sarah. in terms of casting aside social morals, i think most famous heirs (or the super-rich/powerful in general) have at least sidestepped them , keeping their dalliances and hedonism out of the public eye with the complicity of the ruling class and the media. that the Hilton's are flaunting their transgressive behavior makes them icons more of anarchism than feminism. they're not empowered in any meaningful way and are simply another brick in the wall of the celebrity meat grinder which will undoubtedly spit their grizzled carcasses out the other end as soon as something newer and flashier comes along. this is what they belong to and what defines them.
"street-smart toughness"? please give me some of whatever you've been smoking.

Posted by: Sarah at April 2, 2004 01:35 PMhas any woman outside of Madonna ever been taken seriously with overt sexuality as an M.O.? without repsect there's no power (symbolic or otherwise) in ones actions, unless those actions themselves are worthy of respect. i think you'd be hard pressed to find many people who profess to respect paris hilton or what she does/stands for.
Posted by: jamie at April 2, 2004 03:04 PMWell, I think there's a whole generation of women who grew up in the wake of Madonna with the ideals that overt sexuality is another way of being a powerful woman. And I think that you'll find thousands and thousands of Japanese girls who respect the Hilton Sisters. Granted Nicky is the one carrying alittle more of the "respect" card, which is why she's the one designing the Samantha Thavasa bags, and I think in the end Nicky will become well respected in fashion and business, but Paris is more the face of the Hilton girls' image.
