a softball to end the year
amid the recent tragedies, all the "best of 2004" lists, and the sites stepping over each other to publish their "celebrities who died this year" lists, the ever-eagle-eyed Paul Lukas and Uni Watch give us the rundown on all the major (i.e. horrific) trends and developments among sports uniforms.

could anything possibly be worse than this?

I always enjoy his articles. Now THAT is a great job, writing about uniforms.
Thanks for keeping it lite today, tsoa. I go away for a few days, and everything goes to hell in the blogosphere.
Including you and me, apparently.
Happy New Year.

paul lukas has definitely created the best job in the world for himself - writing about packaging. damn! i believe it was balgavy who first referred to the awful color of the padres uniforms as "oatmeal." nice one. fake stirrups are possibly the worst uniform alteration of the last five years.

A vote for the NASL's "Caribous of Colorado," who I'd submit had the worst name, logo (http://home.att.net/~nasl/logos/Colorado_Caribous.gif) and uniform (http://home.att.net/~nasl/jerseys/Caribous_1978.gif) in the history of world professional sport.
Keep in mind when viewing the uniform: I couldn't find an actual photo on the web, but the band of vertical yellow stripes across the chest in the artist's rendering was actually leather fringe, a la cowboy chaps.

Dave, you're right that those designs are an affront to sport. I couldn't find a picture of the White Sox uniforms that included shorts from the 70s, which may be worse than those pictured. the orange and purple that Clemson has recently started wearing is also horrific.

Ooooh... forgot about the shorts. Here's a pic I found: http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/exhibits/online_exhibits/dressed_to_the_nines/timeline_1976.htm
I wonder how Jorge Orta, who stole 24 bases that year, felt about the shorts when he was sliding into second base. Ouch.
