beltre and nomar they aren't
i was looking forward to DC getting a baseball team so i would have a National League team to root for. but if they're going to pull stupid crap like signing the overrated Vinny Castilla and Cristian Guzman to multi-year contracts, i may have to reconsider that stance. not that they're helped by the fact that they still don't have real ownership putting them at a disadvantage during the free agent season. could MLB make this situation any worse somehow?

3 million per to me seems like a pretty good deal for Castilla, who was good last year. Anything for Guzman is a bad deal, crummy as he is.

Is Jim Bowden just trying to legitimize his "interim GM" position that he's already announced he plans to leave once/when the new owner is selected? The entire process is an embarrassment and the first season will be a lot of trial and error, thanks primarily to MLB waiting until the last possible minute to announce the city.

Castilla hit .218/.281/.493 away from Coors last year. and let's not forget his whole season line of .232/.268/.348 from 2002. i'd rather have Tony Batista.

now that dan has drawn me in to comment on his baseball page, I thought I'd weigh in on this topic. It's going to take the Nats quite a while to dig out of the Montreal stigma and attract any real quality free agents, especially right now when they don't have real ownership yet or an actual idea of how that owner will throw his money around. Guzman and Castilla are no prize, but thier price tages aren't too high and it's simply a start. Guzman is supposedly outstanding defensively and that can't be completely ignored, he's also only 26. Castilla on the other hand, well, did they really have any chance at Beltre, Glaus, or Koskie?
