the B team
could anyone have predicted that the media sources who would finally step it up against this corrupt and morally bankrupt regime we call a presidency would be The New Yorker and 60 Minutes II? The Washington Post has some 'splaining to do.

We were too busy with stories about cicadas and copulating pandas.

The W Post had a great article yesterday, digging into Bush's fundraising tactics. If you want to seethe, check it out. Starting with the first election, he's raised almost $300 million, and according to the article, as much as half of that was raised by a very small number of people, whose primary motive is to keep a corporate-friendly figurehead in the Oval Office. It makes him seem more like an empty suit than ever.

Surprisingly given the recent weather, we haven't yet had any of what Larimer and I call "Damn, It's Hot" stories, complete with the requisite picture of kids splashing around under a sprinkler. There's also "Damn, It's Cold" stories, "Damn, It's Snowy" stories, "Damn, We're Never Getting the Expos" stories (although if you believe Jayson Stark, we ARE getting the Expos) and "Damn, D.C. Public Schools Are Lousy" stories (actually, we've had a lot of those recently).

The New Yorker isn't all that surprising when you consider the reporter they have on the job is Sy Hersh, who has been breaking stories like this since My Lai. But being the good company man that I am, I'll have to remind you that the Post's coverage of Iraq over the past year did earn a Pulitzer.

i know the Post is doing a fine job. i think what this really shows is how scandal-proof this administration is because everyone is so strongly divided on their opinions.
liberals revel in the corruptness because there's so much of it that's so obvious, while conservatives ignore it because Bush & co. are so good at pushing their agenda. the media unfortunately gets stuck trying to pander to both sides, the results of which show up in the fact that most stories have a life cycle of about 3 days before each side claims that the other is "politicizing" it and everyone gets bored and moves on.
i'm willing to bet that no matter what happens in the next 6 months that the poll numbers barely move, unless this prison scandal takes Rumsfeld down in which case Bush is in big trouble.

Ok, maybe I was wrong. This was a great article too. I can't wait until Sujan's next issue arrives!
