GMail GPros and GCons

GMail has been polarizing since it was first announced at the beginning of April, first as people worried about the targeted ads that would be placed alongside messages, and now as the tech community argues whether this really represents a big leap forward or whether it's simply "webmail with a really big quota" (read all the comments for some industry insider sniping and some good counter-arguments).

while recognizing that there's nothing revolutionary here, the more i see and read about it, the more i'm excited to leave Yahoo! and its ilk behind. perhaps shmoo can let us now how her Beta testing experience is going. now comes the hard part - picking out a username.

the gmail. well the gmail experience for me is intricately linked to my gmail partner, Giao, a capital chap who keeps the conversations flowing while i am away. this way, you don't have to feel guilty for not writing, your gmail partner picks up the slack. i recommend if you get yourself an account, that you get yourself a partner. and be sure never to sign your mail, that way, no one really knows for sure who's writing. and it kicks the fun up another notch. BAM!

but i'm pretty sure you were more curious about the "functionality." it takes some getting used to. it kinds of takes as a given that people won't change the subject line often because it lumps conversations together by subject line. as one who used to compulsively change subject headings as a fun little game, i find myself doing this less so i can keep the thread intact. it is great for mailing lists. i was feeling overwhelmed by my inbox before gmail, but now it's much easier to skim through the random postings since they are lumped together. give it a try. it's free. you can always go back to yahoo.

i am enjoying the gmail. i can see myself loving the search feature, a year from now.
