packing their trunks

the circus is coming to town, and while we pretty much don't care, the wife has been agitating to see the elephants as they come through the Midtown Tunnel on their way to MSG. we went with balgavy.com CEO marc and some others a couple years ago - it was freezing and took forever for them to appear , but it was still kinda kool to see large, wild (albeit well trained), mammals wandering the streets of manhattan. here's the scoop on this year's pachyderm procession:

It all begins on Tuesday, March 16 with the arrival of the Pachyderm Procession at 11:30 p.m. Elephants will emerge from the north tube of the Queens Midtown Tunnel and proceed along 34 Street to The Garden. Make sure to come out along 34 Street and welcome them.

drop us a line if you want to join us and pray for temperate weather.

I am a major opponent of having elephants in circuses. And for that matter, marching them down crowded urban streets. Elephants are intelligent, sensitive animals and people should leave them the fuck alone. (I realize that it might be hard to take me seriously because I'm often joking, but this time I'm not.)

what about zoos? are those OK? does the same go for the lions, tigers, bears, camels, etc.? just wondering where you might draw the line.

and what about dumb, cold blooded (in the non-literal sense) animals? is it okay to parade vultures and sloths through urban streets?

If you can tell me where there will be vultures and sloths paraded through the streets, please tell me and I will be there to cheer them on.

Now that it's a week later and I'm reading these comments, I'm wondering whether I should bother to post. I doubt anyone will ever see this. But I just want to say that for some reason I like elephants more than most other animals. Some zoos are okay, but not the shitty urban ones with cages. Like Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. The lions just sit in the corner of their concrete room looking bored and depressed. That's not good for anybody. I get the idea that camels are ho's for attention. And bears probably shouldn't be walking down a crowded street, as they very well might maul a person or two.

Don't think that a camel won't spit on you and everyone you care about if given the chance Jim.
