before heading off for the bucolic splendor of Vermont and the palatial HQ of the official brother of t.s.o.a., a couple quick things:
in the 70s, the Washington Post took down Nixon. now they subject us to this. you'll have to click through because it's so horrible that i can't even discuss how much it pains me. seriously, we're headed for another civil war.
on the bright side, the wife and i watched the documentary about They Might be Giants on Sundance last night which was very entertaining. lots of interesting stories and interesting people that they got to talk about the Johns from Brooklyn. i know not everyone loves their music, but you could do a lot worse for people to admire than a couple of guys who play because they love doing it and who are genuinely nice and down-to-earth.
have a great holiday all. this space will be re-occupied come Monday. and don't forget, Friday is Buy Nothing Day. travel safely.
Posted by jamie at November 24, 2004 03:43 PMi caught the last twenty minutes of the TMBG doc the other night and really enjoyed it. i'm one of those who isn't a fan of their music (except for the occasional song now and again when i'm in just the right mood) and i found myself really pleased that the doc existed.
after seeing it and DIG, i really do think every band in the world should have well made films made about them.
Posted by: marc b. at November 24, 2004 04:24 PMfunny...i saw the second half of "Dig!" last night on IFC. Seeing as how I don't exactly have my finger on the indierock pulse, few will be surprised that I hadn't heard the music of either band before (although I probably had seen their names in village voice adverts for clubs I never went to). Both bands pretty much sucked, although the "successful" band definitely sucked more than the heroin band, which I guess is almost always the case. Still, having been in bands with people that are actually demented, I was genuinely fascinated by the whole thing.
Posted by: Dave Nelson at November 26, 2004 03:50 PMI loved TMBG in high school so I woulda liked to have seen the doc, I hope it's on again. I've long sinced lost my TMBG CD, I'll have to buy it for my iTunes! Speaking of buying:
I spent A LOT on Friday, forget about spending nothing at all. In preparation for my 10-year HS reunion I bought last-minute stuff for my mom needed to throw us a pre-party plus liquor and wine for late-night, spent $85 on my ticket to the reunion, picked up a huge order at my photo lab, and went to town at Nordstrom--I needed some new bras (they AIN'T cheap!) and a pair of boots, plus I was out of perfume and while I was there, I also bought gifts for others. To add insult to injury to the plan to "think instead of shop," I also probably dropped 10 bucks at Starbucks. Oh, and I filled my car up with gas. Oh well, I'm single handedly keeping our economy afloat! :)
